Since the 1980s, Life Sciences R&D has built expertise and R&D competence in bio-technology field. This lead to a successful launch of a broad-spectrum quinolone antibacterial agent, the first U.S. FDA approved new chemical drug in Korea. Furthermore, concurrent successes in developing several original products, such as recombinant human growth hormones and new diabetes drugs, and signing partnerships with multinational pharmaceutical companies accelerated Life Sciences R&D’s entry into the global market. Life Sciences R&D is focused on finding and developing new chemical and biological drugs, and diagnostic agents.

New Chemical Drugs

New chemical drugs are artificially synthesized low molecular weight medicines that require comprehensive R&D skills in organic chemistry, biology, pharmacology, and others to produce. At Life Sciences R&D, we have been focusing on developing new chemical drugs and successfully developed “Factive”, a broad-spectrum quinolone antibacterial agent approved by U.S. FDA, and “Zemiglo”, a drug for treating diabetes. We are committed to develop innovative drugs that can fulfill the unmet medical needs of patients and healthcare providers.

Combination Drugs

Combination drugs are synthetic medicines that combines two or more active pharmaceutical ingredients to improve efficacy, safety, and/or convenience of use compared to conventional drugs. At Life Sciences R&D, we are developing new combination drugs based on our in-house developed diabetes drug “Zemiglo”.

Vaccines

Vaccine is a safely processed biological pathogen, or similar substances, which as a whole or part can be injected into our body to prevent pathogen infections and diseases. Since the 1990s, our persistent R&D efforts lead to the localized production of the recombinant hepatitis B vaccine and the Haemophilus Influenzae type b (Hib) vaccine for the first time in Korea. Furthermore, we have received WHO's pre-qualification approval for the five-in-one liquid vaccine “Eupenta" following the hepatitis B vaccine “U-Box". At Life Sciences R&D, we are continuously moving forward with these experiences and expertise to develop next-generation vaccines that can lead the global market.

Biosimilars

Biosimilars are biological products with equivalent pharmaceutical efficacy to the expensive original biologics, but they can provide treatment benefits to wider range of patients at more affordable prices. Our 1st generation biosimilar “Valtropin”, a recombinant human growth hormone, has been granted the EU Marketing Authorization (2006) and U.S. FDA Approval (2007) for the 2nd time in the world. With these experiences and expertise in biologics manufacturing, we are continuously developing other monoclonal antibody biosimilars.

HA Products

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a water-soluble polymer complex distributed throughout the in vivo skin and joints, and it degrades easily in the human body. We produce high purity and high quality HA raw materials as well as various HA products that can control the in vivo stability and viscoelasticity of drugs through our unique cross-linking technology. Our representative products include “Synovian”, an osteoarthritis drug, and “YVOIRE”, a cosmetic dermal filler.

New Biological Drugs

Biologics R&D is expanding from 1st generation protein drugs and 2nd generation antibody drugs to the emerging 3rd generation cellular therapy drugs. Cellular therapy drugs are produced by extracting, cultivating, and manipulating human cells, and they are transplanted to the patients. Utilizing the biologics manufacturing capabilities and expertise accumulated through biosimilar R&D, we are extending our R&D programs to the immune and stem cell therapies to provide innovative biologics for fundamentally curing various diseases.

Diagnostics

In order to secure the core competencies in diagnostic medicine business, we have been invested in the R&D for the last 20 years. As a result, we have developed the world's first malaria antibody diagnostic reagent and Korea's first hepatitis C diagnostic reagents as well as other numerous diagnostic products for allergies, tuberculosis, and respiratory viral infections. We are focusing on categorizing human genome to associated diseases and finding target substances required for early diagnosis of diseases with prominent researchers around the globe. Furthermore, we are developing easy-to-use and highly reliable POCT (point-of-care-testing) diagnostic systems along with faster and more accurate diagnostic kits for emerging medical fields for cancers, allergies, respiratory diseases, and geriatric diseases.
